Above is the 16th day after the attack on Buttercup
Buttercup is 3 years old
Everyone looks forward to vacation, but in Butercups case. It was a nightmare to come home and find your beloved little mini horse had just been attacked by a dog. Poor Buttercup was ripped open on all four sides of her body, bite mark to numerus to count, her anus ripped open, but she was alive.
The dog, a Great Dane, a domestic dog that went into a frenzy. My friend knew she had to make the heart wrenching decision to put the dog down and it was done. To do this much damage to another animal was just to much, it could have been a child.
I must warn you, the photo's on this page are extreem. Since Buttercup has given a brave recovery, we are letting you see exactly how the recovery is going.
The date of the attack was May 7th 2013 in the early evening, by 8PM, she was in the back of a vehicle and taken to an animal clinic on emergency call and stayed for 3 and a half days, returning home on Saturday in mid morning. She was bandaged with one drain in her neck, no stitches just gapping holes. I, Marty, personally did not agree with what the veternarian did to the little horse, they did stitch up her anus. More could have been done, but their practice is mostly small animal. (dog and cat) Buttercup was so little they had to put her in a dog kennel.
Dee has kept this picture journal of the use of Equine Elite Products, which I am a firm advocate for. This product has saved more animals for me personally but it not well know and no veternarian, that I know will stock it. These products are truely a life saver for dogs and horses. (see link below)
First night at the Vet Office
Left Rear rip Right Rear outside Left Rear 4th day after attack
First picture of neck rip
These first pictures show the damage of the rips and bites of the dog, but more will happen as the healing progresses. Dog bites are deadly for the bacteria they carry in their mouth. Each bite should have been treated at the Vets office, there were just to many. Consequently each bite had to rot the skin area and surrounding tissue. It will slough off creating a new area of holes that will expand. As you see the new tissue growing, the massive damage will start to fill in with new tissue until closure.
Major areas are: The Neck, Right Rear Leg above the hock and around to the front of that leg. The Left Rear leg with a cresent slash up on the lower rump and a deep rip on the inside of the leg and hundreds of dog bite punctures.
As of Tuesday May 21st 2013, 3 weeks after the attack, the neck area is no longer critical and the cresent rip on the Left Rear Rump area is no longer critical.
Left Rear above the leg
Below is the same area on day 4. Note the healing from inside out.
Above is day 8 of equine Elite. Full scab over. :) This day, the area is not considered critical any longer.
Below, neck hole 5th day of Elete Products.
Above, Day 6th of Elite. May 22, 2013
Below is day 7 of Elite. All of the healing is going wonderfully and this area is no longer a deadly threat.
Below is day 8 of Elite hole is closing and scabs forming. A few more days and the bandages will come off.
Above day 12. Almost totally closed.
Below, day 18 of Elite cream.
Above is the Inside Left Rear Leg, healing quickly on the 5th day of Elite Wound Cream, Relief and Wash.
Above is day 7 of Elite on the left rear. Scabbing over nicely, no threat. You can also see the right rear hock sluffing off. A reminder that the bone is just under skin on the top of the hock and will expose the bone when it comes off.
Above is day 9 of Elite. New tissue on the outside of the leg and now new tissue growing over the bone in the front of the leg.
Above is day 9 again from another angle. New tissue filling in rapidly.
Above is day 10 of Elite, this side is doing great but the inside is still sluffing dead tissue and skin. There is a hole in the center and you can see through the leg. See below on day 10.
Day 10 view from the inside of the Right Rear. This same thing happened above the hock a few days ago and that is covering rapidly.
Below is day 11 of Elite on the outside right rear leg. Almost total closure. New growth top down and abover the hock up. New blood vessels happening. The bone is still exposed on the inside front --->
I want to put a reminder here that Buttercup was bitten multiple times. The rips and tares are one thing to deal with but the toxins in the bites are a different matter. Each small wound had to run the course of sloughing away dead tissue making the wounds 20 times bigger and harder to deal with.
Day 12 Outside Right Rear.
Above Day 12 inside Right Rear. Note the black scrapes and punctures above the hole. These are made from dog bites.
Day 14 outside Right Rear top. This is where the giant hole was.
Day 14 Right Rear hock
Below Day15 of Elite on the left inside
Above day 15 right rear inside. The bone is almost totally covered.
Buttercup, 25th day after attack and 16 day of Https://www.equineelite.com
Right Rear leg
Above, 5th day of Elite, 2 weeks after attack. Looks nasty but there is quite a bit of new tissue here. May 21, 2013
Above, day 6 of Elite. Notice how fast the tissue is regenerating. There are also a few more ligaments that have let go but Buttercup is putting weight on the foot and walking around on the side. Amazing picture of day 5 to day 6. Rapid tissue growth. May 22, 2013
Above is day 7. New thing happening here. While the original upper is healing nicely, above the hock and around to the inside of the leg, is now sluffing dead skin exposing the bone.
Inside Right Rear Leg
Below is day 7 in the area of the inside right rear leg opposite the hock. Total bone exposure. I can assure you she is not in pain as a human would think, is walking on the leg and putting good weight on her hoof. There is no fever in the leg itself and she, amazingly has bloodflow to the hoof. With the new area exposed, bandages have to be changed and now can be done with no damage to the upper outside hip damage.
Below is day 8 of Elite(same area as above picture) ONE day and look at the new coverage. It's bloody but the new vessels are starting. In unwrapping they let loose a bit. This has not been washed or medicated yet today. There is new tissue on both sides of the bone in about 15 hours.
Above is the inside of the right rear leg. Quite a bit of dead skin has sluffed off but new tissue developing on the right side of the hole. May 22, 2013
Inside of the left hind leg damage. This taken first day home. Elite products had not arrived yet. The picture above this one is the 6th day of elite to the wound.
Above you can see the ligiment damage. It is hanging, is one of many.
Below is the same area as above picture on the 11 day of elite. Great healing from the inside out and Clousure of the massive hole.
5th day healing on the RR hock. Nice new tissue cover on the 5th day of elite. May 21, 2013 Darker area's of this upper hock have darkened indicating that the skin is dead and will sluff off, exposing the bone.
Both rear legs on day 10 of Elite.
Below is day 11 of jElite, lots of new tissue growing from the inside out.
Even thought the bone is exposed during treatent, there is no discoloration and it is moist. As long as the moisture stays in the wraps there is less chance of bone infection. This bone is healthy.
Day 12 Right Rear Hock
Day 14 of Elite
Inside left leg
Day 14 outside Right Rear
Day 14 Cresent on Left Rear leg, scab as sloughed. This is good. Wonderful healing from the inside out.
Below Day 15 of elite outside right rear. Almost total closure with new tissue.
Day 15 of Elite on Right Rear inside leg. Connection of tissue, finally. :) there is just a little of the bone showing here but it is healthy with no signs of infection.
These books are getting some great reviews. They are written for teens and young adults but it seems everyone is liking them. :) Winter months are cold here so I hope you enjoy what my immagination comes up with as I wait for spring. Enjoy. :) Come join me on twitter. MissMarty49 and Marty Rightmyer in facebook. I will always answer questions on the books, mountain and the critters in email. :)
